martyn lloyd-jones on what the church is for:

the primary task of the Church is not to educate man, is not to heal him physically or psychologically.... i will go further; it is not even to make him good. these are things that accompany salvation; and when the Church performs her true task she does incidentally educate men and give them knowledge and information...she does make them good and better than they were. but my point is that those are not her primary objectives. her primary purpose is not any of these; it is rather to put man into the right relationship with God, to reconcile man to God.

kristen and i helped out at the renewal centre today
it's a place for homeless people and garbage collectors to shower
they can hand in clothes to be washed or pick up the clothes that were washed for them in the past week. there are also a lot of clothes to give away
today these two old grannies came in for the first time
they were around eighty, from an hui provence and lived under the bridge by the river
they looked like they hadn't had a shower in a good month or so
one of them asked for some new shoes and when i gave her some she was ever so thankful for them
after their showers, one of the volunteers blow dried their hair as we picked out new outfits for them [their existing clothes were in need of a wash]
jessica handed an overcoat to one of them, but she wouldn't take it because it was 'too good for her' she said we should give it to someone else. it broke my heart.
finally after much convincing granny left with a giant red puffy ankle length jacket
too cute

i cannot wait to go back next week
